About this Course
This course develops fifth-grade mathematical fluency and reasoning across five core strands: decimals, fraction operations, expressions, volume, and the coordinate plane. Sessions build from place value and decimal reasoning through increasingly complex fraction computation and algebraic thinking, culminating in geometric measurement and graphing — preparing students for the transition to middle school math.
Course Strands & Progression
1. Place Value & Decimals
- Understand place value relationships to the thousandths, including powers of 10
- Read, write, and compare decimals to the thousandths
- Round decimals to any place
- Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths using place value strategies
2. Fraction Operations
- Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators, including mixed numbers
- Multiply fractions and mixed numbers, and interpret multiplication as scaling
- Divide unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions
- Solve real-world problems involving fraction operations
3. Multi-Digit Arithmetic & Expressions
- Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers
- Divide up to 4-digit dividends by 2-digit divisors
- Write and interpret numerical expressions using grouping symbols (parentheses, brackets, braces)
- Generate and analyze numerical patterns and relationships between two patterns
4. Measurement & Volume
- Convert measurements within a system (e.g., cm to m, grams to kilograms)
- Understand volume as an attribute of solid figures
- Measure volume using unit cubes and apply volume formulas (V = l × w × h) to rectangular prisms
- Solve real-world problems involving volume, including composite figures
5. Geometry & the Coordinate Plane
- Understand the coordinate plane: plot and interpret ordered pairs in the first quadrant
- Represent real-world and mathematical problems using graphing
- Classify two-dimensional figures based on properties of their categories
- Understand the hierarchy of quadrilaterals and other polygons
